The film features the prominent characters of Super Mario Bros, including the princess Peach and the antagonist, Bowser. Bowser, a monstrous tortoise, attains the super star from the Penguin King by defeating him, thereby becoming the most dominant character. He possesses a colossal floating ship constructed from rock and lava and commands a vast army primarily comprising of Koopas, i.e., flying tortoises. Additionally, he receives assistance from a magician named Kamek.
The Super Mario Brothers, Mario and Luigi, reside in Brooklyn and work as plumbers. They have invested their entire life savings in an advertisement with the hope of accelerating the growth of their plumbing business. However, the advertisement fails to yield any significant results, aside from a few calls from clients. Their fortunes seem to change when a section of Brooklyn is inundated due to a ruptured pipeline. They venture underground through the gutters to repair a valve and save Brooklyn. In the process, they discover a mysterious subterranean labyrinth of colossal pipes. Luigi is inadvertently sucked into one of the pipes, and Mario follows suit. Mario finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom, which is governed by Princess Peach. The movie’s scenes constantly evoke the world of the Super Mario game. The kingdom is inhabited by diminutive creatures known as toads. Mario befriends one of them, who escorts him to the palace to meet the princess.
The Mushroom Kingdom resembles the world of Super Mario games, where large mushrooms grow and one can acquire various power-ups by consuming special mushrooms. These power-ups aid Mario in overcoming obstacles and transforming into a cat or a bear. Princess Peach holds an affection for Mario and is concerned about the safety of her kingdom, as Bowser has obtained the super star, rendering him invincible. She anticipates the assistance of the Kong army in defeating Bowser. The princess takes Mario under her wing, training him in game-like scenarios to enhance his fighting skills and acquire power-ups through the consumption of special mushrooms. Meanwhile, Luigi has been taken captive by Shy Guys from Bowser’s army and is now in the custody of the monstrous tortoise, Bowser, who also holds an affection for Princess Peach. Upon learning of Mario’s arrival in the Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser tasks his magician assistant, Kamek, with gathering more information about him.
Upon the Shy Guys' delivery of Luigi to Bowser, the latter inquires about Mario’s whereabouts before proceeding to incarcerate Luigi and suspend him in a cage above a pool of molten lava. Princess Peach escorts Mario to the Kingdom of Kongs, which is governed by an aged and deranged ruler by the name of Cranky Kong. The Kongs possess swift and fashionable modes of transportation. Initially reluctant to offer assistance, Cranky Kong eventually agrees to aid them on the condition that Mario engages in combat with his son, Donkey Kong. Mario emerges victorious in a shrewdly executed battle against Donkey Kong. While en route back to the Mushroom Kingdom with the Kong army, Bowser’s forces launch a surprise attack, resulting in the destruction of the Rainbow Road leading to the Mushroom Kingdom. Consequently, the Kong army is unable to reach their intended destination. Mario and Donkey Kong plummet into the sea, where Mario valiantly saves Donkey Kong’s life.
Princess Peach hastens to the Mushroom Kingdom and alerts the Toads that Bowser, accompanied by his army, is approaching and that they must evacuate. Bowser proceeds to attack the Mushroom Kingdom and coerces the princess into marrying him, with the intention of sacrificing all the prisoners on the occasion of their wedding. The princess becomes incensed and declines the offer of marriage. Donkey Kong and Mario also arrive and engage in combat with Bowser’s army, utilizing power-ups. Mario rescues Luigi, while the princess confronts Bowser and freezes him. Bowser launches a lethal missile that could obliterate the kingdom, but Mario manages to guide it out of the kingdom and into the pipe through which he had entered the Mushroom Kingdom. The missile detonates in outer space, but the explosion creates a portal between Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom. Everyone, including Bowser and his large ship, is drawn into the portal. A battle ensues between Bowser and the Mario Bros, who acquire the Superstar from Bowser and then vanquish him severely. Bowser is defeated and apprehended. The princess feeds Bowser a mushroom that reduces the monster to the size of a small bird, and he is confined to a cage for the remainder of his life. The Mario Bros save Brooklyn and then return to the Mushroom Kingdom with the princess.
